Erected to the memory of John Hunton First President of the Wyoming Pioneer Association (1926) Bullwhacker of the 60's. 1839 - 1928
John Hunton was one of Wyoming Territory's leading bullwhackers, ranching on Chugwater Creek in the early 1870's. During the winter of 1874 - 1875, he built several hewn log houses on LaPrele Creek about 6 miles south of Fort Fetterman. This settlement was the first and only one at that time between Fetterman and Medicine Bow, and included a blacksmith shop and charcoal pit, all of which he himself built. Along with freighting, Huton supplied beef and firewood (at $4.00 per cord) for the fort, grazing his oxen along the creek.
